thumb sprain
The patient came to the clinic with pain at the base of the thumb, heat and pain when touching the base of the index finger side of the thumb, and pain when moving the thumb compared to the other fingers, and felt that the range of motion was decreased. The most common ligament injury of the thumb is damage to the medial and ulnar collateral ligaments of the thumb. These ligaments attach to the middle joint of the thumb, the metacarpophalangeal joint, and are very strong, stabilizing the thumb and allowing it to pinch and grasp, but this superior range of motion and movement comes at the cost of less stability than the other fingers. Because of this superior range of motion, the thumb is more prone to sprains, dislocations, and ligament injuries than other fingers. The most common cause is an overbending of the thumb too far outward. Repetitive gripping or twisting movements can gradually damage the ligaments. In judo and other sports, when an opponent often twists his body to dodge techniques during a grapple for body armor, stress is placed on the first joint in the fourth finger and on the medial collateral ligament in the thumb, and if the ligament supporting the thumb is stretched, instability and pain in the finger can be a symptom. Acupuncture and moxibustion treatment is used to stimulate blood circulation, soothe and eliminate inflammation, relieve pain, and nourish the ligaments and tendons with poor blood flow to speed recovery.
