指の第1関節、1番指先の先端にある関節の背側（甲側）にできる膨らみを、ヘバーデン結節と呼ばれます。この指のふくらみは年齢に伴う変形性関節症と考えられています。変形性関節症とは、関節の表面を覆う軟骨の老化や摩耗によって、骨に直接負荷がかかり、骨が徐々に変形する加齢性の疾患です。母指の付け根（CM関節）に生じた場合は、母指CM関節症と呼び、人差し指から小指までの第2関節（PIP関節）に生じるとブシャール結節（Bouchard結節）と呼ばれます。正確な原因は、はっきりとは分かっていませんが、40歳以上の女性に多く発症します。発症の原因としては、加齢や指先の過度の使用などで起こるのではないかといわれています。特に指先を使う仕事をされているかたに多い傾向があります。へバーデン結節の治療は、安静と対症療法（保存治療）が中心となります。鍼灸治療としては、膨らんだ結節部分の筋肉の緊張や、神経圧迫、こわばり、安静時にも感じる痛みを取り除きます。自然治癒力を向上させる鍼灸治療をすることにより、症状が効果的に緩和されます。また、腫れや熱感があれば、患部を冷やしたり、軽くマッサージを行ったり、テーピングや装具などにより関節の安静を保つことも、痛みを軽減していきます。へバーデン結節は、多少個人差があるものの、やがて痛みは落ち着くことが多いですが、変形性が進んだりすると、指先に力が入りにくくなることもあるので、整形外科への受診も大切です。

Acupuncture and moxibustion treatment relieves muscle tension, nerve compression, stiffness, and pain felt even at rest in the area of the swollen nodule. The symptoms are effectively relieved by acupuncture, which improves the natural healing power of the body. Cooling the affected area if there is swelling or heat, light massage, and keeping the joint at rest by taping or bracing can also reduce pain. Although Heberden's node pain often eventually subsides, although it varies somewhat from person to person, it is important to see an orthopedic surgeon, as advanced deformity can make it difficult to gain strength in the fingertips.
