超音波療法は超音波の振動を患部に照射する治療法です。超音波の振動によって血流の改善・増大、疼痛の緩和、 組織の伸展性の向上に効果が期待できます。超音波とは人間の耳では聞こえないほど高い周波数（20kHz以上）で振動する音波です。この超音波の機械的振動を生体に照射して、治療効果を上げるのが超音波療法です。超音波を照射すると、その振動によって生体組織が加温され、生体内にある数μｍの微小な気泡が圧縮と拡張を繰り返し、細胞膜を適度に刺激して細胞を活性化させます。超音波が組織内を伝導する時には、靭帯や腱、その他結合組織などの深部組織で、超音波エネルギーは、熱エネルギーへと変換されます（温熱効果）。一般的には1MHzと3MHzの2種類の周波数を使用しますが、1MHzはより深部まで到達するため、大きな筋肉の損傷などの治療に適しています。一方、3MHzは体表～2cm程度の部位に作用するため、表層部の治療に適しています。疼痛、筋スパズム 、瘢痕組織、 関節周囲炎、 関節拘縮、 リウマチ、 腱鞘炎、 上腕骨外側、 上腕骨外側上顆炎（テニス肘）、 手根管症候群、 腰痛、 肩こり治療に効果があります。症例写真では、肘痛に対して超音波治療をして、疼痛緩和をさせています。
Ultrasound therapy is a treatment method in which ultrasonic vibrations are applied to the affected area. The ultrasonic vibrations are expected to improve and increase blood flow, relieve pain, and improve tissue extensibility. Ultrasound is a sound wave that vibrates at a frequency so high (20 kHz or higher) that it is inaudible to the human ear. Ultrasound therapy is a treatment that irradiates the mechanical vibrations of ultrasound waves to the living body to improve its therapeutic effects. When irradiated with ultrasound, the vibrations heat the living tissue, and the microscopic bubbles within the living body, which are only a few micrometers in diameter, repeatedly compress and expand, moderately stimulating cell membranes and activating the cells. As the ultrasound waves conduct through the tissue, the ultrasound energy is converted to thermal energy (hyperthermic effect) in deeper tissues such as ligaments, tendons, and other connective tissues. Two frequencies are generally used: 1 MHz and 3 MHz. 1 MHz reaches deeper into the body and is suitable for treating large muscle injuries. On the other hand, 3 MHz acts on the body surface to about 2 cm, making it suitable for treating the superficial layers of the body. It is effective in treating pain, muscle spasm, scar tissue, periarthritis, joint contracture, rheumatism, tendonitis, lateral humerus, lateral humeral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), carpal tunnel syndrome, back pain, and stiff shoulders. In the case photo, ultrasound therapy is used for elbow pain to relieve pain.
