指先から2番目の関節（PIP関節）がこぶ状に膨らんで指が曲がって変形してきます。痛みが強い場合も全く痛みのない場合もありますが、関節の変形が進行すると曲がりにくくなります。骨の変形が進むと皮膚を刺激して爪側に水ぶくれのようなでっぱりができることがあります。これを粘液嚢腫（ミューカスシスト）と呼びます。
更年期になると女性ホルモンの中でもエストロゲンが減少します。エストロゲンは軟骨を滑らかな状態に保つ作用があるためこれが減少すると軟骨がすり減るのが早まる可能性があると考えられます。遺伝性があるとはっきりわかってはいませんが、女性に多いことからも家族がへバーデン結節だと同じような体質になる可能性もあります。
The second joint from the tip of the finger (PIP joint) swells into a hump and the finger becomes bent and deformed. It may be painful or completely painless, but as the joint deformity progresses, bending becomes more difficult. As the bone deformity progresses, it may irritate the skin and cause a blister-like swelling on the nail side. This is called a myxocyst.
During menopause, estrogen, one of the female hormones, declines. Estrogen helps keep cartilage smooth, so it is thought that this decrease may cause cartilage to wear away more quickly. Although it is not known for certain that the condition is hereditary, it is common in women, and it is possible that a family history of Heberden's nodules could lead to a similar condition.
